The magazine was founded in 1954 with the first issue appearing in January, 1955. The name derives from a French medieval and renaissance masque group. Hay was expelled from the CP (at his own insistence) as a "security risk" to the party because of his involvement in the Society. In some ways the novel is as impressive today as it was thenand this in spite of the great change in attitudes toward homosexuality in the past forty-five yearsfor it has the mark of authenticity and for this reason is a compelling read. A member of the CPUSA, Hay structured the small group like a Communist Party cell.
